Sheldon Adelson: Casinos
built 633 days ago
Adelson, a staunch Republican supporter, has had extensive experience in dealing with China in its service sector, officials said. Adelson said governments in China and Singapore, where the Sands is building convention centers and casino-resorts, have been "very cooperative" and most problems are "issues of understanding rather than contentious issues," according to the AP.

While under construction, union activists sparred with Adelson. A federal court ruled in 1999 that The Venetian resort violated U.S. labor law by trying to prevent members of the culinary and bartenders unions from rallying on a sidewalk outside the casino. The Venetian resort is nonunion.

“Sheldon is a brilliant businessman, but he can be enormously difficult,” said Gary Loveman, chief executive of Harrah’s, the Las Vegas-based casino giant. “When he has a strong point of view, he pursues it very stridently.”

"At first, I thought it was political exile," Adelson recalled. "I thought (rival Chinese casino developer) Stanley Ho had some influence that he got me off the peninsula because that's where he believes the center of everything is. All I was hoping was that I could get a location in which I could really do something."
