She Done Him Wrong (1933), from director Lowell Sherman, is Mae West's star-making, most famous film role as a liberated, racy woman who enjoys her sexuality - as a character named Lady 'Diamond' Lou. The Naughty/Gay Nineties character was a recreation of her 1928 Diamond Lil Broadway stage play (and its bejeweled title character). Credits for its screenplay are given to Harvey Thew, John Bright and Mae West herself. The box-office smash film for Paramount Pictures, given a different title than Diamond Lil to disassociate itself from the toured, scandalous play during part of 1929, was shot in approximately three weeks (including rehearsal time). Its single Academy Award nomination was for Best Picture, but it lost to Cavalcade. (It was the [O]nly Mae West film ever to be nominated.)

Fri 9/26 After a whole summer away from the dirty mayhem of the Rotten Apple, She Wolves were back with a bang at Hank's Saloon in Brooklyn for one of their regular down-and-dirty punk'n'roll nights. Gettin' messy with them was the fabulous NY Wrecks, whose MC5 style soul pounding performance had the crowd screaming, and Black Flamingo, who offered a gentler yet equally intense show. She Wolves ripped through their well-oiled tour set and topped it off with a medley of Ramones covers. It was so much fun it's surprising it wasn't illegal.

In this series, most characters behaved the way comic book characters generally do, but She-Hulk "knew" she was in a comic book. She would address the reader directly, reach across panel borders or tear through to the next page to grab a fleeing villain, and even argue with Byrne himself the way Rocky & Bullwinkle sometimes argued with the narrator. The Blonde Phantom, who had briefly starred in a Marvel comic during the 1940s, became a supporting character. She, too, was "aware" of her status, and had joined the cast because comic book characters age only when they aren't seen for a long time, and she wanted to get back into a regular series, even in a menial position, before it was too late.

In this screen adaptation of Fay Weldon's novel, The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, Susan Seidelman has transformed a black comic masterpiece into a watered-down, dim-witted vehicle for TV sitcom star Roseanne Barr. Phenomenally successful hack-romance novelist Mary Fisher (Meryl Streep) sets her sights on accountant Bob Patchett (Ed Begley, Jr.), who is easy game. read more

In all the other film versions of H. Rider Haggard's "She", Leo Vincey's guardian has been called 'Horace Holly'. In this one, the nameplate on his door says 'Ludovico H. Holly'. In the books, Haggard calls him L. Horace Holly, so both variations are plausible. more

Fri 7/26 Never was there a dull moment at the birthday triple-header bash for Jayne County, Leee Black Childers, and She Wolves drummer Tony Wolf Mann. Don Hill's was jammed for Jayne's awesome 2 AM set with the best looking crowd seen on the rock'n'roll scene for ages. But it wasn't just all high hair and high heels; other highlights were the Lucky Stars, who played a ripping round of awesome covers. Plus the Star Spangles got it on with with their New York-by-way-of-English-trousers rock. She Wolves kicked some serious ass both on and off stage that night (you know who you are) and the music and merriment went on till closing time. If you missed it this year, you can only wait 365 or so days to catch the mayhem next year!
