Shattered Galaxy: Games

The logistics of Shattered Galaxy require some explanation. First, you create a hero and join a faction. Your hero can walk around the planet, buy/equip units, and participate in faction politics. Resources come in the form of tributes every few minutes (the more land your faction owns and the more you participate in battles the larger your tribute). Tributes eliminate the need for resource gathering, and since there's no building management, you figure out quite early that this game is all about tactical engagement and micromanagement.

Though described as an MMORTS, Shattered Galaxy's gameplay is closer in flavor to a real-time tactics game. Instead of commanding an entire war machine, including infrastructure, supplies, resources and objectives, players are given control of a small squad of units (6 to 12), which they control alongside as many as 20 teammates, each with similar squads, and against similar opposition. Likewise, battles do not center around the destruction of the opponent's base, but rather around Points of Contention, of which there may be anywhere from one to five. These "POCs" are reddish circles on the ground which must be seized by occupying them for a certain period of time (generally 1 minute and 30 seconds). If the attacking side ever controls all of them, they immediately win; alternately, when the game's built-in 15-minute battle timer runs out, the side with the majority of POCs is declared the winner.

Considering Shattered Galaxy is the first massively multiplayer real-time strategy game, you might assume that the game would have too many rough edges to be anything more than just innovative. Shouldn't a more tried-and-true game design, rather than a daringly original one like this, end up as the best multiplayer strategy game of the year? On the contrary, Shattered Galaxy provides such a remarkably well-done and refreshing change of pace to conventional RTS gaming that it completely deserves this most distinguished title. The game may not look like much--but it can easily keep you occupied for hours at a time, for days on end--even for months.

Which is good, because without the fun factor, Shattered Galaxy will not impress your friends or relatives. The graphics are well below today's standards; little blocky guys running around shooting each other. The maps are especially bland and primitive, with random walls, giant eyeballs or puddles of water with essentially no design flair at all. It looks more like a game from a few years ago.

Shattered Galaxy defies the imposition of genre. It incorporates elements of appeal from various genres such as role-playing games, real-time strategy games, turn-based strategy games, and squad-based games, combining them into one dynamic gaming experience.
