Louisiana State University Coach DALE BROWN said he was certain that SHAQUILLE O'NEAL, his 7-foot-1-inch sophomore center, would not only return to L.S.U. next season but would ... be back for his senior year as well. O'Neal, according to most pro scouts, would be a certain first-round pick, most likely the No. 1 choice, if he took early entry into the National Basketball Association's June draft. The deadline for applying is May 12.

In 1987, when Shaquille was 15, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where his father was stationed at Fort Sam Houston. Shaquille attended Cole High School, where he was a B student. He ... continued to grow; by the summer after his junior year he stood at 6'10" and weighed about 250 pounds. Even though Cole High went 32-1 during Shaquille's junior season, he was not considered an outstanding prospect. During his senior year, O'Neal's father began criticizing him for halfhearted effort. Finally, Sgt. Harrison told his son that if he was not going to try his hardest, he might as well quit.

It appears that Shaquille O'Neal had a pretty good reason to curl his lip at Kobe Bryant last season. Thursday's L.A. Times reported that when Bryant spoke to Colorado police investigating his infamous hotel hookup-gone-bad, he told the detectives he should have bought off the woman—like Shaq does.

With Shaquille O'Neal sidelined, Blount could get several more starts. He has value in deeper leagues but beware of his free throw shooting, as he hit just 3-of-8 from the line tonight. Once Shaq returns, Blount's value will take a hit.

O'Neal's mother, Lucille O'Neal, married U.S. Army sergeant and future FBI agent Phillip Harrison (whom O'Neal considers his father figure) shortly after Shaquille's birth. O'Neal spent some of his childhood in Germany in Wildflecken, Bavaria, where his stepfather Harrison was stationed with the U.S. Army. It was there that he first began to play basketball and where he would meet his future college coach, Dale Brown.

Though Shaquille O'Neal is certain to be a valuable asset to OBRT's sting operations, he may prove to be a less-than-effective undercover operative. When a middle aged net-stalker shows up at a shopping mall to get with the hot 15 year-old he met on AOL Teen Chat, he may get suspicious when his "girl" turns out to be a 7-foot-1, 325 pound man wearing a halter top. And a blond wig.
