The Shang Dynasty was the first dynasty in ancient China. The different states of China fought each other for land until the Shang kings took control over northern China and set up large cities. The royal family lived in a walled palace with their advisers and diviners.

Shang Dynasty (商朝 1600 BC - 1046 BC) followed Xia Dynasty and preceded Zhou Dynasty in China. Information about the Shang dynasty comes from bronze artifacts and oracle bones, which are turtle shells on which were written the first records Chinese characters, found in the Huang He valley. These bones typically had three sections: a question for the oracle, the oracle's answer, and whether the oracle later proved to be correct. A number of ceremonial bronze vessels with inscriptions date from the Shang period; the workmanship on the bronzes attests to a high level of civilization.

The Shang Dynasty started in about 1600 BC and was taken over by the Zhou Dynasty in around 1050 BC. The Shang Dynasty was made up of about ten cities. Around eight of these were located along the Yellow River, while the others were along the Yangtze. The Shang capital started out in Anyang, a city southwest of what is now Beijing, but was moved to Zhengzhou in around 1100 BC. Once thought to be merely mythological or legendary, archaeological evidence now shows that the Shang Dynasty (1700-1100 BCE) did actually exist. Shang rulers occupied a series of capitals in the Yellow River valley that had walled perimeters, royal palaces, and vast royal tombs. These tombs reveal a warrior culture with human and animal sacrifices to accompany the deceased in burial. Entire teams of skeletal remains of horses and charioteers have been found in some royal Shang burials. These tombs ... contained riches of bronze vessels, such as this example, as well as gold, jade, ivory, and silver, attesting to the wealth and power of these rulers. In the following Zhou dynasty (1100-21 BCE) Confucius proposed a system of thought that featured reverence for one's elders and traditions.

In the whole period of the Slave-Owning System in the Shang Dynasty, struggles for the throne occurred many times, and the internal contradictions of the nobility intensified. Misery spread wide among the people, and the dynasty declined. There were thirty-one kings in seventeen generations. The last two kings were Di Yi and Di Xin. Di Xin or Zhou, the king of Shang, is known in history as a cruel and debauched tyrant. He devised many cruel laws and means of torture, oppressing and expoiting the slaves and common people.
