The house of the Zhou whose blood flowed through the veins of the Shaman King were indentured slaves of the Shang. The house of the Zhou was wise and their gods were benign, as they believed in the freedom of the human mind and spirit. Their gods did not thirst for blood as did the Shang gods. The Shang tolerated the gods of the Zhou because they believed it kept the Zhou weak and made them happy productive slaves.

Shaman King is both an anime series and a manga series by Hiroyuki Takei.where shamans team up with ghosts and spirits to achieve their goals. to become the Shaman King, who is able to contact the Great Spirit in order to be the savior of the world. Various magical and religious terms are spread through out the story but they merge into something explainable by the time the main plot arrives. For the uninitiated, Shaman King centers around a group of special children gifted with the powers to interact with those that inhabit the spirit world. Yoh Asakura, the main protagonist of the series, is on a mission to assume the role of Shaman King and rid the world of those who would want to do it harm. Along the way, you'll make plenty of new friends and even more enemies, all delivered with a healthy dose of sentiment. At Yoh's side is his faithful spirit companion Amidamaru, an ancient samurai that shares a special bond with Yoh. At any time, Yoh can become one with Amidamaru's spirit and he can transform into an incredibly powerful warrior. This sets the stage for nearly all of the action you'll find in the series.

Shaman King is fairly straightforward and derivative, but it actually works more than it doesn't under those conditions. The spirit assigning is actually fun and fairly deep, but the refreshing adventure feel is undermined by a ridiculously sloppy map setup. Shaman King is still a surprise hit, and those of you who are starting to run out of Game Boy Advance games to play should go ahead and pick it up.

In November of 2004, Shaman King was cancelled by Weekly Shonen Jump. Shaman King was let go due to declining popularity in Jump's fan polls (indicated by their willingness to release the final completed manga volume (Vol. 32) if there was a great enough fan response).[1] This cancellation was untimely given that the series was nearing its end.[2] Release of the final volume had been suspended indefinitely, but was released in spring of 2006.[3]
