In 1990, Shakira met Monica Ariza, a local theatre producer, who was eager to expose her talent to the rest of Columbia. An audition for Sony Colombia was soon set up for Shakira with its executive Ciro Vargas, whom Ariza met during a flight to Bogotá. Although at first rejected by Sony’s song and artistic director, Vargas was convinced that Shakira had tremendous potential and eventually pursued Sony’s executives to sign the singer.

In 2006, Shakira enjoyed tremendous success with "Hips Don't Lie," a single from Oral Fixation Vol. 2 featuring Wyclef Jean. The song was one of the most successful dance releases in years, and it proved to be Shakira's first chart-topper in the U.S. and the UK, leading to a worldwide tour that lasted over a year and covered four continents. With her fans anxious for more, Shakira ... released an accompanying tour DVD.

Shakira has been accused of stealing music from a variety of salsa singers from Puerto Rico, Argentina, and even England. However, it was determined that every one of the songs she ripped off had itself ripped off The Bangles' "Eternal Flame"--plus all those other salsas were made in New York City. The cases were all resolved in her favor, except for one in El Paso, which was resolved by getting a rope.

In late 2006, Shakira released "La Pared" as the fourth single from Fijación Oral Vol. 1. The song reached number one in her native Colombia, Argentina and Spain. Later in 2007, "Las de la Intuición" was released as a single in Spain and Latin America. It became an instantaneous success, topping the radio chart Los 40 Principales for eight non-consecutive weeks and peaking at number one, charting just four weeks in Argentina. In mid-April, Shakira filmed a video for the song in Miami, which was then premiered via the internet on May 7. The video, inspired by the work of photographer Helmut Newton, features Shakira with a bright purple wig, alternating between wearing a tight black corset and either a black shirt with a white tie or a white shirt with a black tie.
