Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (born February 2, 1977), known simply as Shakira, is a ten-time Grammy Award-winning Colombian singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer and Golden Globe nominee who has sold nearly fifty million copies of her albums worldwide. She has been in the music industry since 1991 and she wrote her first song at age 8. In 2001, she broke through into the English-speaking market with the release of her first album in that language, Laundry Service, which she wrote and produced herself and which has sold 4 million copies in the United States and 15 million copies worldwide.

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on February 2, 1977, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is the youngest sibling of her parents' eight children. Her father William Mebarak, who is American of Lebanese descent, and Colombian mother, Nidia Ripoll, both supported their daughter's ambition of becoming a singer. Shakira knew early on that she wanted to be a professional musician and by the time she was 8, she was already writing her own songs.
