Shaft's turf is the very mean streets of New York. He has expensive tastes, and likes to dress sharp. He has a swinging bachelor pad in Greenwich Village and works out of an office in Times Square, but his cases often take him into Harlem and other black neighbourhoods. His clients and friends come from the streets, and his cases often involve various black mobsters and/or radicals. He distrusts most whites, but he has little use for black radicals, either. He's content to be his own man.

[T]he objects of Shaft's furious takedowns aren't always representative of that screwed-up system, whose demise would signal the coming end of said system. Actually, they tend to be — aside from an easy-target rich and cheeky white kid — products and emblems of the same ire that drives Shaft. And so, the major difference between the Shafts is, unsurprisingly, their plots. Where the first was a notoriously independent "private dick" who took on the white cop and criminal establishments, the current model faces a series of injustices that are both more overt and more insidious. He begins the film as a cop, but soon quits the force spectacularly, hurling his badge like a lethal weapon at a judge, so that it embeds itself in the wall behind the idiot's head. Point taken.

After this second injustice, Shaft quits the police force, and it's here where the film slides quickly downhill. Written by Singleton and Richard Price (Ransom), the story introduces a Dominican drug lord named Peoples Hernandez (played by Jeffrey Wright, Basquiat), whose sole narrative purpose is to provide Latino targets for Shaft to shoot. Now the dynamics of contemporary action flicks demand that there be plenty of human fodder, so this isn't much of a surprise. But the movie doesn't leave it at that, but rather has three long and ultimately pointless conversations between Wade and Hernandez. In each of these scenes, the movie grinds to a halt while Wright and Bale take turns looking menacing.

To make the character 'fit' for broadcast, Shaft needed to be toned down. Now he would be working with the man instead of against him. Whenever Shaft was in a jam, he could call on Lt. Al Rossi (Ed Barth) of the police department and he would provide Shaft with the back-up he needed to solve the more complex crimes he was now faced with.
