Shadowrun (3rd edition) cover Characters in Shadowrun can be humans, orks, trolls, elves and dwarves, as well as certain diverging subspecies (known as metavariants) such as gnomes, giants, minotaurs, etc. As magic returned to the world, Humans began to give birth to elf and dwarf infants, a phenomenon called Unexplained Genetic Expression, or "UGE". Later, some juvenile and adult humans "goblinized" into other races (mostly orks, but ... some trolls). The term "metahuman" is used either to refer to humanity as a whole, including all races, or to refer specifically to non-human races, depending on context. With the return of Halley's Comet new human variants called "changelings" arose. While not as many people were affected by this change as the previous "Goblinizations" it was enough to spark new controversy in the Awakened World, especially since changelings were frequently regarded as mutants or freaks due to the large variety of exotic traits they show.
Shadowrun is a tabletop cyberpunk+fantasy based role-playing game. The game is set between 2050 and 2070. The creator of the game used the Aztec mythos of earth being a great cycle. The next cycle begins in 2011 and brings magic back to the world at the same time technology has brought cyberspace into full being. In addition, due to the cycle change, a small percentage of the fauna (humans and animals) are transformed into exotic animals (like Griffins and Dragons) or beings (like Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, and Orks).
Blasting your buddies requires good hardware, and Shadowrun definitely has a few cool tools for the job. There are seven weapons to choose from, plus every player starts with the basic pistol—giving a grand total of eight. From there, you spend money much like Counter-Strike to buy new gear. You earn money by playing well in a match, allowing you to upgrade after each round. Weapon wise, you can purchase an SMG, Rifle, Shotgun, Katana, Minigun, Sniper Rifle and the FPS favorite, Rocket Launcher. Beyond the firepower, FASA brings in the Shadowrun-famous magic and technology combos.
Shadowrun may have a healthy RPG background on other consoles, but as an Xbox 360 title, it's a pure multiplayer affair with nary a single player portion to speak of besides bot matches that simply simulate multiplayer gameplay anyway. Yes, there is some attempt to wow you with talk of history and ancient lore and reawakened powers, but at the end of the day, the concept is this: the game has a tutorial (six levels) and then three modes of multiplayer play which you can simulate using bots. No more, no less. If Shadowrun had to be compared to something else, it would be the love-child of Counter-Strike and TimeSplitters 3. The team-based gameplay (while nowhere near as good) is akin to CS while the graphic style and character design draws parallels with TS3. This isn't a bad thing though if Shadowrun could find enough new ground to forage on its own.
Shadowrun looks like a normal FPS at first, but that idea teleports out of your brain very quickly. As you see an enemy player resurrect his friend and then sprout a glowing tree from the ground, you’ll know something is very different here. It’s the magic/RPG element in Shadowrun that sets it apart from other shooters on the 360. Mana in Shadowrun is known as Essence. With essence you can unleash attacks and even resurrect players. Some magical abilities expend essence immediately such as Teleport and then regenerate over time.

Standard die with Shadowrun logo Despite various rumors, no Shadowrun movie has been produced so far. In 1999, Shadow Pictures, led by Kenneth Stange, tried and failed to create the first Shadowrun spinoff movie. Due to an unaccepting crowd and a lack of funds, the project was trashed. In the recent years... FanPro's promotional fan film competition has brought forward a variety of German fan-based short films depicting numerous aspects of the Shadowrun world in numerous levels of quality, some in subtitled versions. American-made Shadowrun movies do exist, but are few in number.
