Shadowrun: Fasa Studios
built 186 days ago
Nerd-rage hit a fevered pitch during E3 2006 when Microsoft and FASA Studio announced that the next videogame based on the Shadowrun license would be a first-person shooter. The game was previously being developed as a role-playing game in line with its tabletop roots, and the announcement turned many fans against the upcoming next-gen iteration. The final nail in the coffin was the fact that the game’s focus is on multiplayer. So, honestly, whom is this game going to be marketed to?

A fourth and latest game is for the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista, with the working title Shadowrun developed by US company FASA Interactive owned by the Microsoft Corporation, which is ... producing the title. However, many fans of the roleplaying game have not appreciated the major changes to story, races, and magic in the 2007 title and the new Shadowrun is an FPS (First Person Shooter), which enraged many fans of the RPG series. The publishers of the Shadowrun role-playing game have issued a statement saying, "Microsoft rewrote the timeline and setting for this game, so it is not in continuity with the tabletop RPG. It may be more accurately described as a game loosely based on Shadowrun."[1]

This latest title is the very first game that allows cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and Windows Vista users on the Live for Windows service. Despite sharing the same name as the RPG, the video game has sizable differences from it; as the publishers of the Shadowrun role-playing game stated at the time of the video game's release, "Microsoft rewrote the timeline and setting for this game, so it is not in continuity with the tabletop RPG. The FASA team which stayed behind after learning about their studio's demise went on to create three separate patches for Shadowrun simply because it's "a game we love." Mitch Gitleman continued on stating that about half of the FASA employees had moved to other MGS positions or somewhere else inside Microsoft. Gitleman ... stated that FASA will be keeping the Community Manager and Technical Support Manager on the payroll for continued support of their games.

There’s a lot of discussion going on all over the internet about Shadowrun - the newest FPS for the Xbox 360. FASA Studio, known more recently for their work on Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf for the Xbox, has unleashed Shadowrun to what at least one of their developers deems highly unfair reviews. It received an 8.0 here at Unscripted 360, so that has to count for something!

FASA released 40 Shadowrun novels in collaboration with Roc publishing between 1991 and 2001. Shadowrun novels went out of production between 2001 and 2005, making the books produced towards the end of FASA's ownership of the license hard to find. A 41st novel was announced, but never released.
