The original Shadowman was a young, African-American jazz musician named Jack Boniface. During the Spider-Alien Invasion of 1992, he was bitten by a Spider-Alien agent who posed as a woman named Lydia. The bite somehow altered Jack's body chemistry. During the night, he became more aggressive and restless. He gained enhanced strength and reflexes. Feeling the urge to hunt "demons", the criminals who prayed on the innocent, he adopted a costumed identity of Shadowman.

"The Shadowman" is a creature of unknown origin that stalks humans and drains their life energies, presumably to facilitate its own survival. "The Shadowman" was so named by gossip magazines that ran stories on the creature until Team Bluebird released false photos of "The Shadowman" which just happened to show a zipper up the creatures back. After these photos were "leaked" the stories stopped and Team Bluebird was free to hunt for the creature unmolested by reporters.

The first installment to the Acclaim series, Shadowman, had the advantage of a world without many comprehensive, dark, 3-D adventures, especially not on Dreamcast and N64. But now, in this tri-console world, it’s hard for the brilliance of the series to step out of the shadows of the other more popular adventure titles and into the limelight. In story, concept and atmosphere, Shadowman brings new depths of filth and murk to the game world. Even the game play at times is inspiring. But ultimately, its lack of real innovation and franchise recognition holds it back yet in the end it’s very worth the trip.

Shadowman has a successful video game franchise. The first Shadowman video game sold one million copies on all systems, cementing it as a runaway success. This was despite the fact that Acclaim chose to market their Turok games more heavily, and the planned merchandising blitz for Shadowman—including sunglasses and other apparel—was cancelled.

History: When Jack Bonniface... known as Shadowman, died, it was not the end of the hero known as Shadowman. Because the legacy of Shadowman is longer than the story of Jack. He was only the most recent incumbent.
