Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Infections
built 293 days ago
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by a variety of bacteria, viruses and other organisms. Bacterial STDs, such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis, can be cured with antibiotics. STDs caused by viruses, such as Genital Herpes, HPV Infection, Hepatitis B and HIV infection cannot be cured, but most can be treated to relieve symptoms and help prevent complications. If untreated, STDs can have consequences ranging from mild brief illness to serious complications such as infertility, tubal pregnancy, cancer, stroke, and death. Many STDs can cause serious health problems, including death, in infants born to infected mothers.
Sexually transmitted diseases are diseases that are transmitted through any type of sexual contact. This includes homosexual and heterosexual contact and does not necessarily have to involve penetration. This class of diseases, called STDs for short, includes any infection spread by having sex. STDs include gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV (the AIDS virus), chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes, pubic lice, and genital warts. Many sexually transmitted diseases can be cured with a week or two of treatment. If not treated... some of these diseases can cause infertility.

S[E]xually transmitted diseases (STDs) are recognized as a major public health problem in most of the industrialized world. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in the mid-1990s, 30 million curable sexually transmitted infections (syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis) occurred every year in North America and western Europe, with an additional 18 million cases in eastern Europe and Central Asia.1 These counts do not include incurable STDs such as genital herpes and human papillomavirus infection, for which no up-to-date estimates have been made by the WHO. Approximately 74,000 new HIV infections are estimated to have occurred in 1997 in North America and western Europe.2

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or STI's (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are infections that are transmitted through sexual contact. Two-thirds of all new STD infections occur among people 25 and younger. The most common STDs among college students are genital warts (human papilloma virus), chlamydia, and genital herpes.

The term "sexually transmitted disease" (STD) is relatively new and has replaced the term "venereal disease." This shift in terminology serves to expand awareness of a greater number of infectious diseases transmitted through sexual contact. There are more than 20 STDs, including AIDS, Chlamydia, Herpes, and other organisms and syndromes. Every year millions of STDs are passed from person to person, primarily through sexual contact. Many people feel uncomfortable talking about STDs and try not to think about them, hoping they will go away. Sometimes infections will go away, but usually an STD will return and the infected person will suffer grave consequences of an untreated STD.
