The Seven Sisters are seven historically liberal arts women's colleges in the Northeastern United States. They are Barnard College, Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Radcliffe College, Smith College, Wellesley College, and Vassar College. They were all founded between 1837 and 1889. Four are in Massachusetts, two are in New York, and one is in Pennsylvania. Radcliffe (which merged with Harvard College) and Vassar (which is now coeducational) are no longer women's colleges.

Seven Sisters is a new vision of Appalachia which powerfully evokes the coming of age of seven women through their journey off the family farm. This is a story of heroismnot in a grandiose, earth-shaking way, but through a collection of small acts of sacrifice, courage and generosity. At the center of it all are seven strong willed and colorful womenone family and the fierce bonds that hold them together. A film so powerful and moving, the governor of Kentucky proclaimed March 8, 2001 (International Womens Day) to be Seven Sisters Day in Kentucky!

The Seven Sisters caves are located at Joss Bay in Broadstairs, where the famous smugglers gang the Callis Court Gang used to hide their smuggled goods. The gang leader Joss Snelling was born in 1741, and lived to the age of 96. He was still smuggling goods at the age of 89 when he got fined £100 for smuggling. But the the Callis Court Gang got a bit unlucky one day when they were unloading cargo at Botany Bay. They were surprised by a preventive patrol, and claimed the lives of 15 of Joss's gang, and six others were hanged in nearby Sandwich. Joss Snelling was presented to a young Queen Victoria as 'the famous Broadstairs smuggler'.

Rehabilitating a large structure like Seven Sisters while it continued to produce electricity was a major challenge. The generating station's north non-overflow dam in particular was in critical shape, and engineers were concerned about the pressure of the huge volume of water in the forebay on the weakened structure. Before the difficult task of repairing the north dam began, therefore, the forebay's water level was lowered by 1.1 m to relieve stress - a level that was maintained for about three years. Even so, repair workers toiled behind a formidable head of water of more than 18 m.

Ironically the structure that served as the blueprint for the Seven Sisters - The Palace of Soviets - was never built. Conceived before the 2nd World War, The Palace was to be the ultimate symbol of Soviet power and crowning glory of Moscow. A vast structure of 415 metres (the last 100m of which was to be a giant statue of Lenin) The Palace of Soviets would have been the tallest building in the world, should it have been completed. Although a site was prepared for the Palace - the sacred Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was destroyed especially - the chosen ground proved to be too soft for the foundations of such a momentous edifice. With the advent of World War II the project was suspended and never resurfaced. Eventually a public swimming pool was built on the site instead, which functioned until 1994, when Mayor Yuri Luzhkov had the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour rebuilt.
