LYCOS RETRIEVER
Serpent Isle

The most important question in Serpent Isle: What exactly is the Guardian’s plan? It transpires that Batlin is trying to gain enough power to overthrow the Guardian himself, so the release of the Chaos Banes was not Big Red’s idea. Likewise, the Banes seem to be serving only themselves after Batlin has been killed. Despite all this, at the end, the Guardian acts as though he was behind the entire Imbalance and that you have thwarted his plans once again.[4]

The Black Gate and Serpent Isle were both critically and commercially successful, and widely considered as a high point in the series. In an interview with GameSpot, Richard Garriott stated that Ultima VII "was the most masterfully executed of the Ultima series." [1] He has ... often stated that the game was, along with Ultima IV, his own favorite part overall.[2]

Upon Serpent Isle, which was once called the Lands of Danger and Despair, the War of Imbalance breaks out due to the fact that the Earth Serpent, or Balance Serpent, was taken out of the void by Exodus’ doing. Without the Balance Serpent to keep the balance between the Order and Chaos serpents, the two serpents begin to fight. It is at this time that the Silver Tree of Life, currently present in the Lands of Danger and Despair, is destroyed. The Avatar, traveling back in time from the future Serpent Isle back to the time where the War of Imbalance was at its height, restores the Silver Tree of Life and then returns to the future.

If Serpent Isle doesn't run correctly, you can type in your own Custom Configuration. Follow the above instructions till you get to 'Left click 'Configuration'... don't click it. Instead, left click in the text box under 'Config.sys for MS_DOS Mode'. The text box works just like any other windows text editor. Delete what's in there and type in the config.sys you want to use for Serpent Isle. Do the same for the text box under 'Autoexec.bat for MS_DOS'.

On the Serpent Isle, the new culture was readily accepted. Besides the Shrine of Balance, the cities of Skullcrusher and Spinebreaker were constructed to house the Temples of Chaos and Order, while six smaller temples were erected. The land became wealthy and peaceful. It seemed, that the new way had solved all problems of conflict.

The other lands weren't destroyed, merely separated, and when the migrants who disagreed with Lord British's rule and system of virtues departed Britannia via the Serpent Pillars, they found themselves in The Serpent Isle/The Lands of Danger and Despair. Of course, the society which had existed there had become the Ophidian culture and then died out.
