FDA ALERT [04/2005] Seroquel is a type of medicine called an atypical antipsychotic. FDA has found that older patients treated with atypical antipsychotics for dementia had a higher chance for death than patients who did not take the medicine. This is not an approved use.

Often prescribed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Seroquel has been found to be effective but not without a price. In some patients diabetes has been the price. In a letter to health care professionals AstraZeneca, the manufacturer of Seroquel, issued this statement:

The increased risk of blood sugar disorders while using Seroquel was discovered in 2003, prompting the FDA to request that the manufacturer add the new information to the warning label of the drug. In 2004, the drug was named as one of six anti-psychotic medications that can promote diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. Physicians were urged to carefully monitor patients taking Seroquel to ensure that the patient was not developing diabetes. Clinical studies indicated that patients taking the medication were more than 3 times more likely to develop diabetes than patients taking older anti-psychotic medications. Warning signs to watch for include weakness, excessive hunger, and increased urination.

August 24, 2003—A clinical study found that people taking Seroquel were at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes than patients taking older antipsychotic drugs. The data showed that patients on Seroquel were 3.34 times more likely to develop diabetes compared to those taking similar medications.

Evidence of the dangers of Seroquel came to light in August 2003. Soon after, the FDA ordered AstraZeneca to change Seroquel’s label to notify patients about the serious risk of diabetes, but the company failed to comply with this request.

While Seroquel has been shown to be an effective drug treatment for some patients, there are a lot of very serious and sometimes deadly effects. All patients should fully consider its'' risks verses its'' benefits before deciding if Seroquel is the right treatment plan.
