On this day in history, September 16, 1498, Tomas de Torquemada, the Darth Vader of the Spanish Inquisition, kept his appointment with Satan. Before he died, Torquemada was reputedly responsible for the murder of 10,000 people who were burned to death after those infamous trials. Far too often, their alleged heresy was not an article of fact, nor a denial of faith, but, a rumor. Similar allegations of heresy resulted in the Salem witch trials, and, notably, the French burning Jeanne d’Arc at the stake in Rouen.

On September 16, Midwest will introduce twice-daily roundtrip service between Milwaukee and Charlotte, N.C. and between Kansas City and Austin, Texas. The new service will be offered on Midwest Connect 50-seat regional jets. Additionally, Midwest will add a fourth nonstop roundtrip to its Milwaukee-Nashville schedule effective September 4, and a fourth nonstop roundtrip to its Milwaukee-Las Vegas schedule effective October 1. The Milwaukee-Nashville service is provided on Midwest Connect 32-seat regional jets. The Milwaukee-Las Vegas service is operated by Midwest Airlines.

Hilton Head Area Hospitality Association presents their annual FoodFest to be held September 10 – 16, 2007. Island residents and visitors are invited to sample selections from various restaurants and talented chefs from the area. The event has expanded from a one day five hour event to a multiple day food celebration. More than 13 events and activities are scheduled. Some of the events will begin at individual restaurants and others will take place at the festival’s central location of Shelter Cove Community Park on Hilton Head Island. Events include; Best Bartenders Drink Making Contest, Hospitality Waiters Race, and the Tailgate Gourmet Challenge where local chefs and others perform their culinary expertise in the outdoor tailgate kitchen.
