September 11: World Trade Center
built 819 days ago
The events of September 11 inspired unmatched acts of heroism by New York City Fire and Police Department professionals. The tragic course of events at The World Trade Center has created an urgent need for donations to benefit the families of fallen firefighters and officers. The nation's business community and individuals are asked to send donations to help families in sudden turmoil.

Due to the ongoing redevelopment at the site, this year's September 11th observance will take place at Zuccotti Park, which is adjacent to the World Trade Center site at Liberty Street between Broadway and Church Street/Trinity Place. The ceremony will take place at Zuccotti Park and will ... allow family members to go to Liberty Street, descend the ramp to a limited area where they can pay respects and ascend back to street level. This year, responders to the attack will deliver the reading of the names of the victims during the ceremony while music will play in the background. The "Tribute in Light" will again return at sundown. If you are a responder or would like to suggest an appropriate participant for the reading of names, please email cferer@cityhall.nyc.gov or call (212) 442-8953 by August 3, 2007.

A number of memorials were raised in the honor of the victims and heroes of the fateful September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, throughout America, besides the famous sites such as the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The first memorial was erected in Tucson, Arizona dedicated to Captain Jack D. Punches, a passenger in the plane that hit the Pentagon. A sculpture at Los Angeles airport Theme Building, California, is dedicated to them and depicts a compass with words and phrases reflecting national rights, visions and ideals. Another memorial dedicated to the 343 New York City firefighters who sacrificed their lives while helping the victims is situated at the Fire Department Training Center in Los Angeles. It is a 23-ft steel column that was part of the lobby of the World Trade Center.

It is believed that the attacks were originally planned to be executed between March and September 2000[2] but eventually occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001, when nineteen terrorists[3] affiliated with al-Qaeda[4] hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. Each team of hijackers included a trained pilot. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners (United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 11) into the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane into each tower (1 WTC and 2 WTC), resulting in the collapse of both buildings soon afterward and irreparable damage to nearby buildings. The hijackers crashed a third airliner (American Airlines Flight 77) into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. Passengers and members of the flight crew on the fourth aircraft (United Airlines Flight 93) attempted to retake control of their plane from the hijackers;[5] that plane crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In addition to the 19 hijackers, 2,973 people died; another 24 are missing and presumed dead. The victims were predominantly civilians.
