The best time to travel in Senegal is between November and February, when it's fairly cool and dry. It's ... the best time to spot migratory birds and mammals. The only downside of visits during that time are the harmattan winds that bring in Sahara dust to cloud vision and waters (not great for scuba diving). The best music festivals happen in November/December and from April to June. Low tourist season is from July to September - the time of the tropical rains.

On 4 April, 1959, French Sudan and Senegal formed the Mali Federation. The federation became independent on 20 June, 1960, and Senegal seceded from it on 22 August 1960, at which point it replaced the federation flag with similar tricolour with a green star, instead of the kanaga (black man figure) in the Federation flag.

In Senegal, one drives on the right-hand side. Vehicles give priority to traffic coming from the right, except at traffic circles, where vehicles already in the circle have the right of way. Before January 2005... cars entering traffic circles had the right of way. This change is not well known, so drivers should exercise extreme caution at traffic circles.

Islam, the main religion in Senegal, is represented by the green stripe at hoist. Christians interpret green as a symbol of hope, Animists as a symbol of fecundity. The three stripes stand for the Christian trinity, a symbol of unity.
