Senegal: Groups
built 805 days ago
The half-dozen major tribes of Senegal are subdivided into some 20 distinct ethnic groups. Much intermarriage has taken place over the centuries and it is often difficult for an outsider to discern any difference between say, a Serer and a Tukulor. MORE
Pink Lake Senegal ... is famous for its talented artisans who can be found in the major markets, creating and selling their wares. Beautiful gold, silver, and bronze jewelery is exquisitely crafted. Antique beads and large amber necklaces, traditionally worn by the Fulani women, can be found in the markets and antique shops. The Blacksmiths constitute the socio-professional group that made the tools, the jewelries, and other materials, using steel, iron, gold, and other metals. Had the Sénégalese society followed a normal path of socio-economic development, the Blacksmiths would perhaps be the metallurgical industrials of Sénégal today. Baskets, pottery, hand-woven fabrics with incredibly intricate patterns are renowned great buys.
Senegal disappointed its fans in 2006 when it failed to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. in the 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualification, Senegal finished second in their group after losing 3-1 to the winners of the group, Togo.
CRIME: Minor street crime is very common in Senegal, particularly in cities. Most reported incidents involve pickpockets and purse-snatchers, who are especially active in large crowds and around tourists. Aggressive vendors, panhandlers and street children may attempt to divert your attention while an accomplice prepares to rob you. To avoid theft, U.S. citizens should avoid walking alone in isolated areas or on beaches, particularly at night, lock their doors and close their windows when driving, and avoid public transportation. Americans should not walk on dark streets at night, even in groups. To minimize inconvenience in the event of theft, U.S. citizens should carry copies, rather than originals, of their passports and other identification documents.
In 1998, Tony brought a group of twelve educators, musicians, and filmmakers to Senegal for the first cultural exchange journey. Using an interactive web site and email communications, they partnered with over 25 American schools, creating a unique virtual experience. The net result was that the students at these schools got a taste of Senegal almost as if they were there. This visit ... produced CD recordings, a CNN global music feature, lasting friendships, and a promise to return.

While violent crime is not common in Senegal, it does occur. There have been incidents in recent months of Americans in groups of two or three being robbed at knife-point on isolated, dark streets late at night. If confronted by criminals, remember that cash and valuables can be replaced, but life and health cannot. U.S. citizens are encouraged to walk away from a criminal confrontation no matter the material cost.
