One of the point of interests in Semarang is the old quarter of the city, known as Kota Lama [the Old City]. Where several historical old buildings standing still nowadays. Such as Gereja Blenduk [the Dome Church, Saint Emanuel] and Marba Buildingand the old bridge. And not to be missed are the famous Lawang Sewu [the Thousand Doors] and Chinese temple named Candi Gedung Batu Sam Po Kong. Thoseare becomes the landmarks of Semarang.

Semarang is ... an industrial city. Many companies open their manufacture sites in eastern, western and southern part of Semarang. For foreigner who wants to work in Semarang, this place is a good place because of its landscape. You can live in the hilly and considerably cooler housing area in Candi or Bukit Sari while you work in the downtown area. Traffic jam is considered fewer than Bandung or Surabaya. For visitor from Jakarta, driving car in Semarang is "heaven" for its much fewer traffic jam compared with Jakarta.

Semarang's history dates back to the 9th century, when it was known as Pergota. While the city initially took a back seat to the neighboring port of Jepara, it began to gain prominence in the 17th century, growing exponentially thanks to Dutch trade influences in Indonesia.

Semarang ... joined efforts with the municipalities of Surakarta, Surabaya, Padang, and Jambi in cleaning the city, improving city management and in developing human resources through improved administrative regulations and training. It is also a part of the “Kedungsepur”, the regional association of local governments whose members are Semarang city and its neighbouring regencies such as Kendal, Ungaran, Purwodadi, Demak, Grobogan, and Salatiga Municipality.

Other places of interest are either south, southwest or west of Semarang which are usually not visited on one round-trip out of Semarang. It is recommended that you leave the capital on a tour to another city, say, Solo, and see the beautiful things along the way. But even then, you may not be able to see them all in one single day.

Semarang is neither a small city nor huge like Jakarta. Everyone is urged to take account universal rules such as "only walk in the light-bright area"; do not attempt to deal with hookers or trans-sexual hookers which are usually done under secluded and dark area; lady travelers are urged not to travel alone after 11 p.m especially in an unknown dark neighborhood, sometimes even in residential areas. For precautions do carry a mace or pepper sprays. Only take moderate amount of money in an open air ATM.
