Semantics is a subfield of linguistics that is traditionally defined as the study of meaning of (parts of) words, phrases, sentences, and texts. Semantics can be approached from a theoretical as well as an empirical (for example psycholinguistic and neuroscientific) point of view. The decompositional perspective towards meaning holds that the meaning of words can be analyzed by defining meaning atoms or primitives, which establish a [L]anguage of thought. An area of study is the meaning of compounds, another is the study of relations between different linguistic expressions (homonymy, synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, paronyms, hypernymy, hyponymy, meronymy, metonymy, holonymy, exocentric, and endocentric). Semantics includes the study of thematic roles, argument structure, and its linking to syntax. Semantics deals with sense and reference, truth conditions, and discourse analysis.
Semantics is the study of meanings, and it has its root in philosophy, psychology, and linguistics. In the context of computing and technology, semantics means the use of domain knowledge to make software more intelligent, adaptive, and efficient. By using knowledge specific to applications, one can enhance their functionalities and optimize the performance. Often combined with some reasoning capabilities, the use of domain knowledge enables software to do useful tricks such as finding hidden relationships in a complicated web of objects.
Semantics has two basic subdisciplines, linguistic and metaphysical semantics. Linquistic semantics is the study of the interpretation of expressions in a language. It deals with meanings of particular expressions and how these make up the meanings of larger expressions (see compositionality). Within linguistic semantics, a further distinction is made between pure and applied semantics: the latter concerns natural languages such as English or German; the former concerns artificial and formally specified languages (see artificial language).

The Semantics are a rock band 10 years in the making. Original members Ian MacLean, Andrew O'Hara and Shaun Kerridge have been playing and writing music together since high school. Exisiting in multiple forms with different members throughout the years, the nucleus of the band has remained the same. It is the raw passion and natural knack for songwriting that has kept these guys yearning for more. With the welcome addition of Daniel Guy on drums, an old problem with inconsistant drumming has turned into new hope and a renewed sense of purpose. Many of the applications of Statistical Semantics (listed above) can ... be addressed by lexicon-based algorithms, instead of the corpus-based algorithms of Statistical Semantics. One advantage of corpus-based algorithms is that they are typically not as labour-intensive as lexicon-based algorithms. Another advantage is that they are usually easier to adapt to new languages than lexicon-based algorithms. However, the best performance on an application is often achieved by combining the two approaches (Turney et al., 2003).
