In 1994, as a reward for her hard work, Selena promoted Saldivar to the paid position of overseeing Selena Etc. Inc. Things started going wrong in short order. The company's designer quit, saying he couldn't work with Saldivar, products that had been paid for were not delivered and there were accusations of misused and missing funds.
The front page of the April 1, 1995, Chronicle carried news of Tejano singer Selena's death and of the suspect who was taken after a standoff with police. Later stories reported that the suspect, Yolanda Saldivar, had taken thousands of dollars from Selena's business.

A newspaper in Monterrey, Mexico, "El Norte" has some very interesting revelations about Selena and her relationship with her dad Abraham Quintanilla. It has input from Dr. Ricardo Martinez, a plastic surgeon in Monterrey who performed liposuction treatments on not only Selena, but her sister Suzette, as well as her uncle Isaac Quintanilla, who now runs her boutiques. Dr. Martinez confirms that all was not well at home as well as other things. The newspaper ... has input from one Sebastian D'Silva, who worked with Dr. Martinez. D'Silva claims that Mr. Quintanilla owes him money and that Quintanilla once threatened him. He also talks about Yolanda Saldivar and Dr. Martinez, and the role they both played in Selena trying to expand her boutiques in Mexico.

Selena made her way to the lobby before collapsing. Saldivar fled to a borrowed parked truck where, threatening suicide, she held police at bay for 9 1/2 hours until finally giving up.

In early 1995, the Quintanillas discovered that Yolanda Saldívar, the president of Selena's fan club and the manager of her boutiques, was stealing money from the boutiques and decided to fire her. Soon after the fallout, Selena agreed to meet Saldívar in a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi[12] on the morning of March 31 1995 in order to retrieve paperwork for tax purposes.
