Brown marked a turning point in the battle against the institution of segregation that Jim Crow laws had created. It was not the death knell.... Much remained to be done not only to topple legal restrictions but to remove the barriers of prejudice and violence that stood in the way of full integration. Discuss with students what they think these definitions mean in relationship to segregation. Some ideas that will probably be mentioned are Jim Crow laws, such as those segregating buses, restaurants, and so on, and school segregation laws. How do the students interpret the sense of the word meaning "by right", or "of right"?

RACISTS ALWAYS claimed that segregation was the "natural" way of things. In reality, Jim Crow was only upheld through brutal violence. From the end of the post-Civil War period of Reconstruction to the arrival of the Freedom Riders in 1961, 539 Blacks had been lynched in Mississippi alone.
