Second World War: Western Europe
built 622 days ago
The Second World War (1939-1945), like its precursor the First World War, came as no surprise to anyone. Although many statesmen in Europe and the rest of the world did their best to turn a blind eye, the aggressive rise of Fascism during the 1930s could not be ignored. Neither could the re-armament and militaristic expansion of Germany under Chancellor Adolf Hitler. Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1936 with the intention of turning it into an African colony. The Japanese, too, were seeking an empire, and began brutal incursions into China. All these moves were noted but not acted upon by the erstwhile Allies.

As the Second World War lurched toward its end in Europe, the British Chiefs of Staff realized that the United States could defeat Japan without the assistance of its allies. Participation by significant elements of the Royal Navy in American operations against Japan, they believed, would be critical to the post-war political environment where the Americans would certainly assume the leading role. Failure of England to bear her share of the burden could lead to accusations that could only harm relations between the two nations.

The Second World War both strengthened the YWCAs of the world, and left its mark. Many of its members found themselves in situations where they were forced to choose between their conscience and the safety of themselves and their families. In several countries, particularly in Eastern Europe, YWCAs were suppressed and disbanded. Throughout occupied Europe... women worked relentlessly to construct support systems for their neighbours and refugees, often with exceedingly limited resources.[5]

This global conflict, in contrast to the First World War and its main theatre of action in France, was to spread its battlefields over much of the world, and to leave no corner of the planet unaffected. It began with six months of low-key manoeuvring - the so-called ‘phoney war’ - which ended abruptly in the spring of 1940 when the Germans launched their lightning ‘Blitzkrieg’ invasions of Scandinavia, followed by Belgium and France. By June they were in Paris, the British had been bundled out of mainland Europe, and Hitler was preparing to launch an invasion of Britain. His Luftwaffe air force was beaten off during the Battle of Britain.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II, authors of this publication have contributed papers related to the Japanese historical memory of the war, in a comparative perspective. They address questions such as: To what extent has Japan "come to terms" with its past? Is war responsibility admitted at both the official and individual levels? How did the occupation policies affect values and attitudes in the post-war period? Why was the spirit of reconciliation evident in the ceremonies of the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II in Germany and Europe, yet not in Japan and Pacific Asia? In the United States, why did the perception gap between Japan and Germany widen and become more negative towards Japan recently?
