Second World War: Mexican Americans
built 606 days ago
The era of the Second World War was a social and political watershed for Newfoundland and Labrador. The military and economic impacts of the war were immediate, but the social and political consequences of these impacts were far-reaching. The Second World War accelerated the integration of many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians into the consumer values and economic expectations that dominated North American development. At the same time, the war weakened Britain, ending any prospect that it might long continue to support the Commission of Government. Peace in 1945 set the stage for Newfoundland and Labrador’s entry into Confederation.

Aside from showing just how costly the Second World War was, these maps ... indicate the radically different levels of technology at which the armies fought. The British, Americans and Germans were pretty evenly matched, and the heavier losses among the Allies in France and Italy were largely the result of the Germans having the defensive advantage. In the Pacific, however, the Americans clearly outclassed the Japanese, just as the Japanese clearly outclassed the Chinese.

East of Suez is a 64-page scenario book for the Second World War at Sea series. It covers Churchill’s plans, which ranged from the hopelessly optimistic to the patently absurd, and the Royal Navy’s operations in the Pacific alongside the Americans in 1945. Background articles and scenarios describe the operations executed and those planned by the British Eastern and Pacific Fleets from 1943 to 1946. The Soviet Pacific Fleet is ... covered by article and scenarios.
The Korean War began in 1950, only five years after the end of World War II. The participation of Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans in the Korean War was so significant that the Department of Defense paid tribute to their contribution, explaining that "they served with distinction in all of the services. Many Mexican Americans from barrios in Los Angeles, San Antonio, Laredo, Phoenix, and Chicago saw fierce action in Korea. Fighting in almost every combat unit in Korea, they distinguished themselves through courage and bravery as they had in previous wars."
