Sebastian Cabot was the son of the explorer John Cabot. His father, John, had discovered Newfoundland in 1496 when Sebastian was with him. Just as with his father John, trying to find accurate information about the life of Sebastian is difficult. What is known is that Sebastian Cabot was born around 1474. He was a skilled navigator and because of this, in much demand. Cabot had many other talents to include being an explorer and mapmaker.

The Sebastian Cabot was a ship built at Workington by Peile, Scott & Co. in 1854. She was owned by Girvin & Co. and was registered at Liverpool. In 1868 the vessel was renamed David Livingstone, and was listed in Lloyds Register as still being owned by Girvin & Co. It appears she was sold to foreign interests, but was subsequently re-named and re-registered as a British vessel, the Lord Ashburton, in 1870 (see Source 5). In 1873 the vessel arrived at Sydney, NSW from London with passengers, under the command of Capt.Richard Mosey (see Source 6). The Lord Ashburton was wrecked at Tripoli in January, 1880.

Although not born in England, both John and Sebastian Cabot led English ships on voyages of discovery in Tudor times. John Cabot (about 1450–98) was an experienced Italian seafarer who came to live in England during the reign of Henry VII. In 1497 he sailed west from Bristol hoping to find a shorter route to Asia, a land believed to be rich in gold, gems and other luxuries. After a month, he discovered an unknown land – he called it 'new found land', today still known as Newfoundland in Canada. His son, Sebastian Cabot, may ... have been on this voyage.
