built 805 days ago
During his life, Cabot lived in Venice, London, and Seville. He worked primarily as a mapmaker for King Henry VIII of England but he was ... a captain for Spain's King Ferdinand V, performed a number of explorations for England's King Henry VII, and some believe he secretly went into Venice on explorations.

Probably born in Genoa around 1450, and later a citizen of Venice, Cabot's Italian name was Giovanni Caboto. He had read of fabulous Chinese cities in the writings of Marco Polo and wanted to see them for himself. He hoped to reach them by sailing west, across the Atlantic.

Born Giovanni Caboto in Genoa 1450, the man who would later be known as John Cabot was attracted to the treasures of the Orient from a relatively early age. Whilst still a young man he moved to Venice, and it was there that he began learning of the value of Eastern spices and materials as it became his trade.
