Sebastian Cabot: John Cabot
built 803 days ago
Beloved London-born character actor Sebastian Cabot made a career out of playing the terribly proper British gentleman. With a well-groomed tidybeard, a distinct upper crust accent, and a weight of more than 250 pounds, he projected an image of kindness and refinement and managed to appear both cuddly and stuffy at the same time. The star of The Time Machine, Johnny Tremain, Ivanhoe, and Kismet. he is best perhaps remembered by all those from 5 to 50 as the omniscient 'Narrator' in Walt Disney's series of 'Winnie The Pooh' movies, and as Bagheera in The Jungle Book.

Portrait: Sebastian Cabot Sebastian Cabot, son of John Cabot, was born in Venice, Italy. In 1509, he was the first navigator to try to circumnavigate the New World by going north. He may have gotten as far as the entrance to Hudson Bay, which he took to be the passage to Cathay (China), but he had to turn back as his crew refused to go any further.
Sebastian Cabot visiting Henry VII Sebastian and his father John Cabot were Genoese merchants settled in Bristol. In 1497, five years after Columbus's first voyage to the New World, John persuaded Henry VII to let him sail from Bristol, in search of lands which had not yet been claimed by Spain. He discovered Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, which he took to be 'The Country of the Great Khan' - that is, the Chinese Empire. On his return Henry VII rewarded him with £10.
The Explorations of John Cabot and his son, Sebastian, and their landing place in the new world have been a source of speculation and argument for centuries. Newfoundlanders have accepted for all these centuries that Cabot landed at Cape Bonavista. Based on the writings and maps of Sebastian Cabot, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia has ... laid claim to Cabot's original landfall. So has the state of Maine.

Italian Navigator Sebastian Cabot, Engraving, 18th century, The Mariners’ Museum Collection John Cabot's son, Sebastian, was an accomplished mapmaker and navigator. In 1508 with King Henry VII's support, he set sail to discover western lands. He took a northern route looking for a strait to take him to the Orient. When his crew threatened mutiny, Sebastian headed back to England. He was certain he'd found a northwest passage to the East. On the way back he explored the coast of North America.
