Chartered in 1971, the Seattle chapter of AMIGOS de las Americas is one of twenty-four chapters throughout the United States. Over the past thirty years, it has trained hundreds of young men and women to work in collaboration with Spanish and Portuguese-speaking communities in Latin America. Not surprisingly, thirty years of volunteers have returned to Seattle and other cities to continue a life of community service at home. While most of the Seattle area volunteers are high school students, Amigos ... offers opportunities for college students or students outside of a chapter city through its correspondent volunteer program. eighteen chapters of an international, volunteer-driven, non-profit organization. AMIGOS de las Américas was founded in 1965 by a group of Houston volunteers who discovered the need for public health assistance in Latin America.

Echoing trends in other major cities, Seattle's quality of life improved in many areas during the 1980s, according to a report released this week. The end of the '80s found Seattle better off than in the beginning of the decade according to indicators such as infant mortality, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and unemployment. But other barometers of social health, such as poverty and violent crime, rose during a decade in which Seattle's population grew by 22,000. But as some indicators improved, others got worse. * In 1980, 13.3 percent of children in Seattle lived in poverty. By 1990, the number jumped to 15.7 percent.

The Seattle area has been inhabited for at least 4,000 years,[5] but European settlement began only in the mid-19th century. The first permanent white settlers—Arthur A. Denny and those subsequently known as the Denny party—arrived November 13, 1851. Early settlements in the area were called "New York-Alki" and "Duwamps". In 1853, Doc Maynard suggested that the main settlement be renamed "Seattle," an anglicized rendition of the name of Noah Sealth, the collective chief of the two indigenous tribes. As of 2006, the city had an estimated population of 582,174[1] and an estimated metropolitan area population of approximately 3.2 million.[2] Seattle is the hub and largest city of the Seattle metropolitan area, often called Puget Sound, which ... includes Tacoma, Bellevue, and Everett. From 1869 until 1982, Seattle was known as the "Queen City".[6] Seattle's current official nickname is the "Emerald City," the result of a contest held in the early 1980s to designate a new nickname;[7] the reference is to the lush evergreen trees in the surrounding area.
