The Seattle Mariners began playing in a new stadium in 1999. Safeco Field was built from 1997 – 1999 as a replacement to the aging Kingdom. Safeco Field is a state of the art facility that includes a retractable roof and seats just over 47,000 baseball fans. The retractable roof acts only as an umbrella for the stands and the field and does not form a complete closure of the stadium. The 2001 Major League Baseball All-Star game was held at Safeco Field in July.
