The new Sears will come to life by offering customers a "store-of-shops," and a fresh design layout with different flooring, fixtures, and displays. Marquee brand names now found in the new Sears include Sony, Hanes, Workwear - by Craftsman, Carhartt, Timberland and Diehard apparel, Levi's, and Nordic Track. The store will ... feature expanded Home Electronics and Home Appliance showrooms, organized around favorite manufacturers, that will also help customers choose the right look, feel and function with other brands Sears carries.

Sears has struggled with employee relations. One notable example being the shift in 1992 from an hourly wage based on longevity, to a base wage (usually $6/hour) and commissions ranging from 1% to 9%. This new base wage, often constituting a substantial cut in pay, up to 40%, was done in the interest of "to be successful in this highly competitive environment." [19]

Sears engineers and the product development team went to work with its manufacturing partner to design a solution. A big step came early in 2004 when Kenmore introduced the Trio with water through the door. That was as easy as running a water line to the door. But getting ice from the Trio's cavernous freezer, located below the refrigeration compartment, was an entirely different challenge. This problem was solved by moving the ice maker to an insulated chamber built into the refrigerator door, and venting cold air from the freezer to this chamber through ducts to freeze the ice.

In late October, Sears offered to buy Restoration Hardware for $4.00 per share, which the Corte Madera, Cal.-based company refused. On Nov. 8, Restoration Hardware announced that it agreed to a management-led buyout from Catterton Partners, a private equity firm, for $6.70 per share, or about $366.5 million. However, the deal allowed for Restoration to solicit competing bids for a 35-day period ending Dec. 13.
