Searching functions are the least of Footnote’s problems. The site’s structure makes it very difficult to read and download sizeable files. Keyword searching in the voluminous BI files yields hits on single pages, yet for larger files, the filmstrip function on the viewer doesn’t display the file pages in order. Thus you can’t just click on the previous or following document pages and download chunks of files. Moreover in the browse function, BI files are not listed in numerical order. With hundreds of thousands of files, users can’t just page through and find files by number.

Searching for other types of information means you'll have to do some clicking to get to salary information. Searching for "Montana," for example, gives you a list of companies in Montana. Clicking on one of them gives you the same type of information had you searched directly by ticker symbol. You can ... stack the different search types -- searching for trucking companies in New York gives you three results, while just searching for companies in New York -- well, you get a huge page of information.

Searching local data stores is easy. Searching someone else's data store is hard. When building a local database, local tools are used and, hopefully, local tools exist to search the database as well. But, when searching someone else's database, local tools are usually incompatible, leaving the messy option of downloading their database and converting it to a local database which can then be searched with the local tools. If luck holds, data conversion will net be needed. This is a slow and painful way to search for things on the Internet.
