Adhesives and Sealants sales for the quarter were $176 million, up 11 percent over the comparable period in 2003, the result of favorable currencies, increased demand and slightly higher selling prices. North American sales increased across most product lines, benefiting from improved economic conditions and share gain in the caulk market. Sales in Asia-Pacific were higher due to selling price improvements and increased demand for packaging adhesives, labels and tapes. Latin-American sales improved over the prior period on higher demand for pressure sensitive adhesives and stronger economic conditions, while the European market remains soft. Earnings for Adhesives and Sealants of $13 million were up 30 percent, reflecting smoother operations, higher demand and favorable impact of currency offsetting higher raw materials, energy and employee-related costs.

Sealants are most effective in reducing cavities in children with newly formed permanent teeth. In fact, all children should have their molars (back teeth) evaluated for sealants soon after they erupt. For most children, this occurs approximately at ages 6 and 12.

Sealants are overcoming the age barrier. Most individuals have existing pits and grooves in their teeth. Since research shows that almost everybody has a 95% chance of experiencing decay in the grooves of teeth, it goes without saying that sealants aren't just for kids anymore. Adults can benefit from sealants. Bottom-line: prevention starts with sealing at-risk teeth no matter what the age!

Sealants are applied by first cleaning the tooth surface. The procedure is followed by "etching" the tooth with an abrasive substance, which allows the sealant to better adhere. After the sealant is applied, a warm light source is directed to the site to promote faster drying. Sealants usually need re-application every five to 10 years.

Sealants should be checked regularly and reapplied when they appear to have worn off. Because teeth are most susceptible to decay when they are young, preventing decay during the first five to fifteen years after a tooth erupts is critical.
