Screensavers have advanced to the point that they deliver Real Time Images on their displays. The Northwestern Transportation Center has used a real time screensaver program to display real time Chicago Weather and Highway Traffic as well as National Weather and Flight Delays. [1] The Northwestern Real Time Transportation Screensaver, with the help of an internet connection, will give up to the second information in a real time image allowing users to quickly absorb a great deal of data in a very short time. Human factor research has shown that using images are extremely faster than the RSS feeds currently available. This allows for many safety applications such as early warning devices of sever weather, hurricanes, and accidents.

Screensavers are not to be confused with power management features, which place the computer in a low power state after it has been idle for a specified amount of time. In fact, screensavers can actually waste power, because they can prevent the computer from entering the lower power (or sleep) state, and they often cause the CPU and GPU to perform more calculations, and keep the hard disk running for longer than if the computer were idle.

Screensavers are usually designed and coded using a variety of programming languages as well as graphics interfaces. Typically the authors of screensavers use the C or C++ programming languages, along with Graphics Device Interface (GDI), DirectX, or OpenGL, to craft their final products. Several Mac OS X screensavers are created and designed using the Quartz Extreme graphics layer. The screensaver interfaces indirectly with the operating system to cause the physical display screen to be overlaid with one or more graphic 'scenes'. The screensaver typically terminates after receiving a message from the operating system that the mouse has been moved or a key has been pressed.

[I]f you are tired of the default screensavers brought to you by your OS you might start searching for the fresh ones in the Web. And you’ll quickly find out: the choice is enormous; freeware is usually supplied with adware, and there are literally thousands of commercial solutions. What screensaver to choose? Most companies have limited demo- and shareware-versions, but they are almost always rather disturbing than helpful and will only get on your nerves.
