SB2A Buccaneer picture Having just completed the design of the SBA scout-bomber, Brewster set about to produce a more effective aircraft with heavier armament, increased bomb load and higher performance. Unfortunately, performance was far below that anticipated, and the larger, much heavier aircraft lacked manoeverability. The British were supplied SB2As under lend-lease (designated "Bermudas" by the British), but they ... found them completely unsuitable for combat operations. As a result, SB2As only saw second-line service as target towing and training aircraft.
The trickle of small orders became a flood in late 1924 when Martin underbid Curtiss on a contract for quantity production of a Curtiss-designed scout bomber. Originally designated CS-1 (for Curtiss Scout) the Martin version simply reversed the letters to become the SC-1. A large biplane often described as a "three-purpose plane" - torpedo-bomber-scout - the CS/SC and its successors, the T3M, T4M, and TG, proved remarkably durable.

Brewster SBA picture Designed by Brewster as the SBA scout bomber, it was produced by the Naval Aircraft Factory as the SBN. 30 examples were ordered, but with more advanced aircraft becoming available, most were used as trainers.
