The characteristics of the Gaelic language itself, and its unique features such as vowel length, have contributed to the distinctiveness of Gaelic music. This is not just confined to the Gàidhealtachd itself, as many Gaelic airs, for example, were used by Lowland poets such as Robert Burns. There is evidence which suggests that the most unique characteristic of Scottish music, the ‘ScotchSnap’ originates in Gaelic speech.

Place names in their original Gaelic are becoming increasingly common on road signs throughout the Scottish Highlands. The first translation of the Bible into Scottish Gaelic was not made until 1767 when Dr James Stuart of Killin and Dugald Buchanan of Rannoch produced a translation of the New Testament. Very few European languages have made the transition to a modern literary language without an early modern translation of the Bible. The lack of such a translation until the late eighteenth century undoubtedly contributed to the decline of Scottish Gaelic.[5]
Journalists could be playing a bigger role than they think in the demise of the Gaelic language. The 'life or death' of minority languages is a familiar concept and continues to fuel media debate. However, former Edinburgh University academic Dr. McEwan-Fujita who will present a paper at The University of Edinburgh's Rannsachadh na Gàidhlig (Researching Gaelic) Conference, 21-23 July will dispute the accuracy of such colourful metaphors.

In recent centuries... the Gaelic language has been in general decline, both in terms of the number of people able to use the language proficiently and in the degree to which it is used. It is only recently that voluntary groups and government bodies have made attempts to arrest and reverse this decline. The authors hope that this book can provide a useful insight for those who are interested in knowing more about Gaelic and assist those who wish to learn to speak, read or write Gaelic. This book is intended to focus on the kind of sentences and vocabulary which are useful for everyday family life and the author hopes that some readers may make audio recordings of this Wikibook and make the audio recordings freely available to those who wish to use Gaelic as part of their everyday family life.
Teaching the Scottish Gaelic language and encouraging its routine use is Slighe nan Gaidheal's primary mission. After many years of producing individual educational events and trying out various course materials, the Gaelic Education Committee hit on the idea of establishing a syllabus rather than selecting a text book and the Zero to Gaelic program was born.
