The Gaelic website at the Scottish Parliament promotes the Gaelic language by publishing information and news in the language. The site has up-to-date news and an extensive selection of pages relating to the Scottish Parliament and its work, all in Gaelic. The Parliament provides a Gaelic in Scotland Fact Sheet (in English and Gaelic) with a wealth of data on the language including the status of the language, the number of Gaelic speakers in Scotland, legislation and government initiatives, Gaelic cultural organisations, Gaelic broadcasting and a list of Gaelic organisations.

A full Gaelic language TV service... similar to S4C in Wales and TG4 in Ireland, has been under consideration. As in Wales, the showing of programmes in the language as opt-outs on the main channels has been regarded as inadequate for the 58,552 who speak it, and as an annoyance to some of the English or Scots speaking 5,003,459 who do not. In fact, this annoyance may be largely assumed: the evidence is that at least one Gaelic television programme produced by the BBC attains viewing figures in excess of the number of Gaelic speakers that could view it in Scotland. No complaints are being received by the BBC about Gaelic-language television programmes on BBC TV channels, perhaps because subtitling them in English makes them equally accessible to non-Gaelic speakers.

Scotland has its own BBC services which include the national radio stations, BBC Radio Scotland and Scottish Gaelic language service, BBC Radio nan Gaidheal. There are ... a number of BBC and independent local radio stations throughout the country. In addition to radio, BBC Scotland also runs two national television stations. Much of the output of BBC Scotland Television, such as news and current affairs programmes, and the Glasgow-based soap opera, River City, are intended for broadcast within Scotland, whilst others, such as drama and comedy programmes, aim at audiences throughout the UK and further afield. Sports coverage also differs, reflecting the fact that the country has its own football leagues, separate from those of England.

Abstract: In this thesis, a diphone--based text--to--speech system for Scottish Gaelic, a language spoken by about 80.000 native speakers in Scotland and Canada, is presented. Text-- to--speech systems convert orthographic text input into speech output. (Update)

SaveGaelic.org is an initiative set up to promote and preserve the Scottish Gaelic language both in Scotland and around the world. It provides a portal for supporters of Gaelic aimed at attracting the absolute beginner to the fluent Gaelic speakers to mix and share advice and ask questions on the language itself. An important element is the Forum/bulletin Board and there are links to other Gaelic sites.
