NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer is shown before practice at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 7. The Nextel Cup rookie took third in the Daytona 500 a week later. Wimmer was arrested on drunken-driving charges on Jan. 31.

Nonetheless, a short time after his arrest - and after Wimmer finished third in his first Daytona 500 - he began to experience problems again. By the time the Nextel Cup got to its first high-speed, 1.5-mile track, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Wimmer could tell his tube had fallen out.

Scott competed in the United States National Junior Olympics in downhill and slalom skiing at age 14, and finished 13th of the 150 competitors. Wimmer's father owned Scott's uncle Larry Detjens' racing team.[1] Detjens was a champion late model racer who competed at Slinger Super Speedway and Wisconsin International Raceway. Detjens had a race named after him after his death in 1981.

Underway again, Scott Wimmer quickly proved his superiority on the field pulling comfortably away from Cottrell. While Chris Wimmer, Mackesy, Allen Check and fast qualifier Rocky Breezer followed in the top six. Mackesy again skillfully using the outside line pulled alongside Chris Wimmer for third and took the spot with seven laps remaining.

You forget one thing in the Wimmer situation. Firing him in the middle of his legal/alcohol problems might have invited lawsuits for wrongful termination. With the right shyster he could win based on Fed and certain State laws.
