Cllr Parsley stated: "Given the relative lack of resources the Scots language has in Scotland, the development of a searchable database of Scots words covering such a vast range of post-war archive material is a fine achievement. The corpus will provide the definitive reference for the Scots tongue on both sides of the 'Sheuch', a source of pride and enjoyment to those who use it in Ireland as well as in Scotland.

Today, Scots is a living language, in use outwith the Gaeltacht. It is recognised as a separate language, even in the European Union where it is represented by the bureau for lesser used languages.

The Unit's main aim has been to develop a conversational language course that will allow interested adults the opportunity to develop their confidence in the language by creating opportunities for them to speak Ulster-Scots. This course is taught as a foreign language course. It is structured, dealing with both grammar and vocabulary in a systematic way. It focuses on a series of topics and realistic situations and teaching is based on encouraging conversational exchanges. These develop in complexity as the course progresses.

Dr Chris Robinson, director of the Dictionary of the Scots Language, was delighted by the increasing numbers of people visiting the site. "What is particularly encouraging is that it gets people accustomed to reading a huge range of different things in Scots and not just literature," she said.
