The first Church of Scientology was incorporated in Camden, New Jersey as a non-profit organization in 1953. The Scientology missions directory reports over 300 missions,[109] delivering basic Dianetics and Scientology services in 50 countries worldwide.[110] A Scientology Mission is considered a church when it has reached the size required to administer all courses and auditing required for delivering the state of "clear."[111] Overall there are 142 churches in 28 countries established worldwide.[112] Scientology's "Advanced Organizations" are churches specialized in the delivering of higher training levels.[113] Those organizations are located in Los Angeles; Clearwater, Florida;[114] Great Britain; Sydney, Australia; Copenhagen; and the cruise ship Freewinds.[115]

One person starts an introductory service in a Scientology Church or mission every minute. Such services included courses on bettering one's ability to communicate, improving one's marriage and understanding the nature of man and his relationship to God. -- Church ministers and students delivered 1,427,000 hours of pastoral counseling in 1994. (Pastoral counseling, known as "auditing" in Scientology, is the primary religious practice in the Church. It is designed to raise the person's awareness of himself as a spiritual being and with it, his abilities, level of integrity and understanding of God.) --

Comedy Central has scheduled a July 19 air date for a controversial Emmy-nominated episode of South Park that lampoons Scientology and Tom Cruise. A repeat of the episode, titled "Trapped In The Closet," was pulled from the schedule at the last minute in May . The show's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were furious with Comedy Central and the gesture is an attempt by the cable network to repair the rift in the relationship. The duo was told the episode was pulled because Cruise was unhappy with the subject matter.Cruise's representatives have repeatedly denied any involvement in pulling the episode, which prompted Scientologist Isaac Hayes, who voiced the character Chef, to quit the show. Stone insists he is not convinced saying, "I only know what we were told, that people involved with 'Mission: Impossible III' wanted the episode off the air and that is why Comedy Central had to do it. I don't know why else it would have been pulled."
