Scientology® is a criminal enterprise which has a well-documented, lengthy history of crimes ranging from human rights abuses, to domestic and international terrorism and espionage, to numerous homicides. (See the documents covering Scientology's "Operation Snow White" at the http://www.cosvm.org/ web site for specific details.)

The Church of Scientology claimed to have 10 million members as of 2006[76], though national figures it has released indicate a far smaller total. Though the Church has an official membership system, the International Association of Scientologists, IAS membership is not what the Church means by 'member.' Estimates of Scientology adherents worldwide range considerably[77]. According to a 2001 survey of 50,281 interviewees published by the City University of New York, 55,000 people in the United States would, if asked to identify their religion, have said Scientology[78]. A possible problem with such surveys may be that many Scientologists have cultural and social ties to other religious groups and when asked "what is your religion" answer with their traditional and more socially acceptable affiliation[77]. Religious scholar J. Gordon Melton has said that the church's estimates of its membership numbers are exaggerated[79].

The Church of Scientology International filed complaints with the United Nations High Commissioner, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Religious Intolerance and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. They expected to file additional complaints with other international civil rights watchdog agencies. Meanwhile, Switzerland announced that they had found no legal basis to justify the surveillance of church members.

The Los Angeles Times has a news story on how Criminon International (a Scientology associated group that works in many countries of the world) is providing an "anti-psychiatry" rehabilitation program in one of the California prisons. What is important about this news story from the LA Times is that it suggests that this group is recommending people avoid anti-psychotic medications - the treatment most recommended by experts (and backed up by many well-accepted, independent, peer-reviewed clinical studies demonstrating effectiveness in treating schizophrenia).

Leisa Goodman, Human Rights Director, Church of Scientology International, was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, of a Scientologist family. In fact, her family now boasts four generations of Scientology members. Be that as it may, Leisa emphasizes one cannot in fact be “born” into Scientology. It is something that one has to make a conscious decision about based on one’s own observations and experience.

To the public, Heber Jentzsch, president of the Church of Scientology International, is portrayed as Scientology's top official. He appears regularly at news conferences and on talk shows, appearing to be chiefly responsible for church public relations. The real power is consolidated among a handful of Scientologists who keep low public profiles.
