Despite this, the Scientology center is filled with busts and photos of Hubbard and artifacts from his life, as well as several copies of The Hatchet hung along the entryway of the building. In Hubbard's office, which gives off the aura of a shrine, there are grand bookcases filled with all of Hubbard's writings, artifacts from his life, and several different prototypes of E-meters.

The Scientology symbol contains two triangles which Hubbard called the "ARC triangle" and the "KRC triangle", respectively.[51] The points of the lower triangle are said to represent affinity (emotional responses), reality (an agreement on what is real) and communication. Scientologists believe that improving one aspect of the triangle increases the level of the other two.[51] The points of the upper triangle represent Knowledge, Responsibility and Control.[51] Many auditing processes and training routines aim at increasing an individual's ability to gain knowledge of, take responsibility for and exert control over external elements.

In 1968, Dennis Erlich became a member of the Church of Scientology - a forty-year old religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard [ 6 ]. Scientologists, who claim Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Anne Archer among their members, follow a course of religious study called "auditing." The course begins with analysis by an "electro-psychometer," which purports to measure mental state. The goal of the program is to eliminate negative images ("engrams") and attain a state of "clear."[ 7 ] As members proceed through different levels, they gain exposure to highly-guarded proprietary materials.
