Nearly three decades after the Chicago Public Schools all but eradicated recess at most elementary campuses, there's a movement to bring it back -- an effort now championed by schools chief Arne Duncan. It's the first time since Mayor Richard Daley took over the school system in 1995 that a district leader publicly endorsed free play as a priority.
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Attucks Elementary School, Bass Elementary School, Burke Elementary School, Hamline Elementary School, Piccolo Elementary Specialty School and Thomas Chalmers Specialty School are pioneering a new way students learn and comprehend math within Chicago Public Schools. These students will develop cross-disciplinary problem solving skills to better comprehend abstract and concrete math concepts, and increase their national and state test scores. To accomplish this goal, Chicago Public Schools has partnered with Apangea Learning, a leading provider of cost-effective differentiated math instruction.
Major concerns include what children eat for school lunch and what other foods are available in schools. This paper illustrates efforts towards systems change in the luncheon program and food vending machines in the Chicago Public Schools.
