Schools can use Instant Alert to deliver both emergency and routine news, from school-closing notices to report-card reminders. For example, Wayzata Public Schools recently sent an alert to inform parents of a bomb threat at one of the district's schools.

School districts and contractors should develop reasonable compensation packages; provide required training as well as supplemental training to help drivers cope with stress, conflict, passenger management and safety, and defensive driving. Drivers must be alerted to potential vehicle problems or conditions that can cause breakdowns or unsafe operating conditions.

The school buses are scheduled to stage in Gardena, Calif., on Saturday morning (Nov. 12) before being transported to their final destination in San Francisco. The caravan is expected to be about five miles long and will include an International fueling tanker carrying ultra-low-sulfur fuel to refuel the school buses. Ultra-low-sulfur fuel is a new type of diesel fuel that is in limited supply now, but will become more widely available in late 2006. It is available today under special arrangements between fuel suppliers and customers in the states of Washington and California where municipalities and school districts are the primary users.

CMS, among the nation's 25-largest public school districts, currently enrolls more than 135,000 students in 167 schools. Twenty-five thousand students - almost one in five - are being educated in portable classrooms. Some of those classrooms date to the 1960s. CMS gains between 4,000 and 5,000 new students each year.

All school supplies collected will be donated to the local school district in which each branch is located. Specially marked collection bins will be set up at each branch from now through Oct. 31, 2007. Donations of new school supplies are welcomed and appreciated from both customers and non-customers. Sterling hopes every student will have the tools needed for success this school year.

Under current state law, only local school boards have the authority to approve the creation of charter schools. Because charter schools are funded with public dollars that would otherwise go to regular public schools, charter proponents advocate state laws that provide for an independent authorizing authority. This sentiment is backed by Georgia voters, 78 percent of whom believe that because of this, school boards would be more likely to vote against approving a charter school in their district. Rep. Jones has introduced legislation (HB 881) that would create an "independent authorizing commission" in the state of Georgia.
