Scholarships are the ideal form of student aid, as they're basically gifts that never have to be repaid. On the other hand, student loans must be repaid, but they're made at very low interest rates, and you're usually you're not required to begin repayment until six months after you graduate. Some student loans require you to prove financial need, but some of them don't. Many students turn to student loans as a method to pay for college. Basically, if you cannot get access to the free money you have to borrow it in the form of a student loan.
Scholarships cover tuition only. The scholarship amounts are divided equally based on Fall and Winter enrollment. Requirements for maintaining awards include: maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA while enrolled for 12 credit hours each semester for a maximum of ten semesters, excluding summers for freshmen; a maximum of six semesters, excluding summers for transfer students. The scholarship may be renewed each semester for a maximum of ten (10) consecutive semesters based on compliance with the requirements. Students who fall below the requirements after the first year and meet the requirements in the following year can re-apply, but are not guaranteed reinstatement of the scholarship.

Scholarships require continuous full-time enrollment and residence in University housing for the fall and spring semesters unless otherwise noted. Recipients living at home and commuting to campus must request a waiver of the housing requirement. Students enrolled full-time at an MSU regional campus will be exempt from the on-campus housing requirement. Scholarships are divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. With few exceptions, scholarships are renewable through completion of undergraduate degree requirements or a maximum of eight semesters.
Unlike financial aid which is based on need, most scholarships at UMass Boston are based on merit. Merit almost always means academic performance, but can ... mean community service, or excellence in the arts.
