All freshmen admitted for the fall quarter at UCSB are considered for the Regents Scholarship, based on their UC Application for Admission. No additional information is required. UCSB typically offers the scholarship to students within the top two percent of admitted freshmen. Students are notified by U.S. Mail in early March if they have been selected.

Employees of UCB and their immediate family members are not eligible for this scholarship. Selection of recipients will be at the sole discretion of the physician panel members. After a winner's educational enrollment has been verified for the fall 2008 semester, the scholarship check will be made payable to and directly mailed to the educational institution. Scholarship amounts will be up to $10,000 each to cover the recipient's tuition and/or educational materials expenses. However, if a student does not have a minimum of $10,000 in educational expenses owed for his/her schooling, the scholarship amount will only cover the remaining amount. Scholarship money cannot be used towards expenses other than those due to the school for education expenses.

Economic need is not a criterion for the selection of recipients except where specifically stated. One-half of each scholarship is payable each semester unless specifically stated otherwise. In the case of scholarships that carry awards for more than one semester, the recipient must maintain a 2.0 current grade point average unless otherwise stated throughout the period of the award and must not drop below a full load during the semester. Transfer to another institution will result in the termination of the scholarship. Withdrawal will result in termination unless withdrawal was for circumstances beyond the student's control. Unused portions of a scholarship resulting from withdrawal during a semester, failure to maintain the prescribed GPA, or suspension, will revert to the scholarship fund. Reinstatement of the scholarship after withdrawal must be initiated by the student.

Typically, if you win a standard scholarship, unless it is renewable, your interaction with the donor ends the day you receive your check. According to the IRS, if you are not pursuing a degree, the entire scholarship is taxable. For those students using the scholarship for college, any portion used for tuition, fees, books, and supplies is not taxable. Any funds remaining after your expenses are paid for... are subject to tax. There is not typically a service requirement or other stipulation attached to the scholarship upon receipt of the award, however, you should check to be certain. Scholarships are offered in many varieties—sweepstakes, essays, competitions—for traditional and non-traditional students alike.
