Scary Movie

Although it parodies many movies, the plot of Scary Movie 3 generally is a parody of The Ring and Signs. The lead character from the previous two movies, Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris), is currently a television newswoman who begins investigating the deaths surrounding a mysterious videotape and its connection to crop circles appearing on the farm of Tom Logan (Charlie Sheen). The connection eventually leads Campbell to work with the President of the United States (Leslie Nielsen) to stop an alien invasion of Earth.

"Scary Movie" was the original title of "Scream", the Kevin Williamson-scripted and Wes Craven-directed film that rolled into theaters back in 1996. With its nudge-nudge-wink-wink sensibility and savvy awareness of the tired conventions of 'slasher flicks', "Scream" revitalized audience interest in the teen horror genre, paving the way for at least half a dozen 'dead teenager' movies in recent years. Though a few films, such as the "Scream" sequels, "The Blair Witch Project", and "Final Destination" were able to infuse some novel ideas, the quality of subsequent entries into the resurrected genre quickly deteriorated over the years as theaters were flooded with a number of 'me-too' copycats, such as "The Faculty" and "Urban Legend". Now, four years later, perhaps to put the final nail in the coffin of the teen horror genre, is another film entitled "Scary Movie"-- only this time it is a parody of its original namesake. Unfortunately, like last year's "American Pie", it seems that the filmmakers have confused the two disparate concepts of 'gross' and 'funny'-- just because you have the first doesn't necessarily mean you have the second.

[Y]ou define the word, Scary Movie 2 has spunk. Like its predecessor, it's as exuberant as it is puerile, oozing a cheeky energy that will make you forgive many things things like a Roman Catholic priest (James Woods) praising the Holy Ghost while defecating the dregs of a disagreeable enchilada out of his system. Things like a paraplegic-yet-limber scientist (Mr. Show star David Cross) giving himself oral sex. Things like Tori Spelling trying to act like her 15 minutes of fame haven't expired yet.

Obviously, the target victims here are the under-25 crowd, and there's no doubt that "Scary Movie" will make a killing at the box office. However, Wayans attempt to stay one step ahead of the audience backfires, with the audience instead staying one step ahead of him. By the time the very predictable jokes finally do happen, they're dead on arrival. The first scene contains a character named Drew, named after Drew Barrymore, the first person to die in the first "Scream" film. Another character, the one inspired by Sarah Michelle Gellar's character from "I Know What You Did Last Summer," is named Buffy, named after Gellar's own hit TV show. Finally, where the principal in the first "Scream" was played by Henry "the Fonz" Winkler, the principal here is played by David "Squiggy" Lander.

Together, they battle to save the world from a ruthless alien invasion. And, in true Scary Movie tradition, the outrageous celebrity cameos are non-stop. Those featured include: Carmen Electra, Shaquille O‚Neal, Dr. Phil, Bill Pullman, Charlie Sheen, Anthony Anderson, Kevin Hart, rappers Fabolous and YoungBloodz, Chris Elliott, Molly Shannon, Michael Madsen, rappers Chingy and Lil' John, Leslie Nielsen returning as our fearless Commander in Chief, plus many, many more surprises.

[One] problem with Scary Movie 2 is that its references were relatively obscure. A parody's success depends on the audience's familiarity with the original text. Scream's clever self-referentiality firmly established it as a memorable piece of horror cinema, worthy of inclusion in the horror film cannon. Thus, Scream is a text that many connoisseurs of the genre know, and provides much material for a successful parody. Scary Movie 2... is a parody of a far more forgettable film, The Haunting (itself a remake of Robert Wise's superior version of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House). Many viewers wouldn't have been so unfortunate as to have wasted good money buying a ticket to The Haunting, and thus much of Scary Movie 2 s references are unknown to much of the audience.
