Scary Movie 2

Scary Movie 2, the opening is a scene of older white people singing lyrics that contain words that would normally be offensive (words much worse than those of Imus). Just one example of the joke that has been featured on countless other programs.
Scary Movie 2 Unfortunately Scary Movie 2 is a pretty "lame-o" affair once its pea soup opener is out of the way. Even loads of parody and bad taste can't save this turkey from tanking, which it does around the 12 minute mark.

[Y]ou define the word, Scary Movie 2 has spunk. Like its predecessor, it's as exuberant as it is puerile, oozing a cheeky energy that will make you forgive many things — things like a Roman Catholic priest (James Woods) praising the Holy Ghost while defecating the dregs of a disagreeable enchilada out of his system. Things like a paraplegic-yet-limber scientist (Mr. Show star David Cross) giving himself oral sex. Things like Tori Spelling trying to act like her 15 minutes of fame haven't expired yet.

The Wayans Brothers return with more horror-film parodies, but Scary Movie 2 lacks the humor, invention and auto-critique of the first film. Bad taste alone just doesn't make it work. This time, the emphasis is on the haunted-house subgenre. (Last time it was slasher films.) The plot--based mainly on The House on Haunted Hill and The Haunting--involves a group of college students (Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Regina Hall, Kathleen Robertson, Chris Masterson, Tori Spelling) who volunteer for a scientific experiment that places them for a weekend in a haunted mansion where Cindy (Anna Faris), another one of the students, grew up--possessed by the devil! After some of the group are nearly killed by the ghost of the house's first owner, the students discover the professor in charge of the experiment (Tim Curry) has evil designs himself, and the teenagers end up battling for their lives.

Unfortunately, the elements of Scary Movie 2 that work are dwarfed by those that fail. The picture is characterized by long laugh-less stretches - death to a film virtually devoid of plot and characterization. As was true of Airplane and The Naked Gun, Scary Movie was a one-shot deal. It can not effectively be reconstituted or appended to. Like Blair Witch 2, this sequel bears the obvious stench of crass commercialism ungilded by pious mouthings of a "creative vision." Once the well is dry, further attempts to bring up water yield only mud.

[One] problem with Scary Movie 2 is that its references were relatively obscure. A parody's success depends on the audience's familiarity with the original text. Scream's clever self-referentiality firmly established it as a memorable piece of horror cinema, worthy of inclusion in the horror film cannon. Thus, Scream is a text that many connoisseurs of the genre know, and provides much material for a successful parody. Scary Movie 2... is a parody of a far more forgettable film, The Haunting (itself a remake of Robert Wise's superior version of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House). Many viewers wouldn't have been so unfortunate as to have wasted good money buying a ticket to The Haunting, and thus much of Scary Movie 2 s references are unknown to much of the audience.
