Scary Movie 2: Sequel
built 219 days ago
Scary Movie 2 It wasn't a classic or particularly well made, but at least Scary Movie was good for a few honest Scream-inspired laughs. That original outing looks like a masterpiece in comparison to this uninspired profit-driven sequel. Barely competent on any technical or artistic level, what comic ingenuity and genre appreciation was shown the first time around has been replaced by boorish vulgarity and a desperation to get the audience to snigger at anything, no matter how lame, crude or obvious. Once past the opening where The Exorcist is amusingly sent up by James Woods in a cameo appearance as a priest (a role originally earmarked for Marlon Brando), it descends rapidly into lampooning the recent remake of The Haunting — so close to an awful self parody itself that any gags at its expense are depressingly redundant. Everything from Charlie's Angels and What Lies Beneath to Hannibal and even The Weakest Link are raked over for minimal laughs in a shoddy satire it took seven screenwriters to produce. It brings new depths to the term “too many cooks spoil the broth”.
Scary Movie 2 When the first Scary Movie hit theaters last summer, secular critics marveled that it avoided an NC-17 rating for sexually explicit humor. The perverse slasher spoof grossed $157 million and sent the Disney-owned studio responsible scrambling for a sequel. It’s here. And according to ads for Scary Movie 2, it’s “More merciless. More shameless.” Give ’em points for honesty. The original horror/comedy dismantled slasher films.
"Scary Movie 2" does have some big laughs, as expected. The "Exorcist" prologue, as already mentioned, is deliciously zany, as is an ongoing gag involving a foul-mouthed, trash-talking parrot, and the unforgettable role of Chris Elliott. Even still, long stretches are vacuous of successful humor, and at 82 minutes, the whole thing plays like little more than an afterthought that seems to have taken about five days to shoot. Choppily edited and obviously rushed to theaters to quickly make a tidy profit, "Scary Movie 2" reinforces the age-old adage that sequels really do usually suck.

1/4 stars [I]t comes as no surprise that the all-too-inevitable sequel, "Scary Movie 2," is more of the same. But even fans of the original may find their patience tested by this even more loosely knit collection of movie parodies, few of which could be categorized as clever or funny.

SCARY MOVIE 2 SCARY MOVIE and its sequel really cannot be analyzed as far as storyline goes. NEWSFLASH! It's a comedic parody, not a historical drama. Ironically, the two spoofs actually have better plots than some of the movies they recreate.

Scary Movie - (movie poster) [One] round of movie spoofs will undoubtedly be included in this sequel to Scary Movie. The original Scary Movie grossed over $42 million in its opening weekend, had the most successful three-day debut ever of any 'R' rated film by any distributor and was the largest opening ever for a film by an African American director.
